Entirely self-taught, he nourishes his painting through observation, experimentation and constant personal research. Yet there is, in his career, an experience that seems to have profoundly transformed his relationship with the world and, consequently, his painting. For nine months, Christian Roy lived at sea, aboard his sailboat Belle Excuse, with the Bahamas as his final destination and the horizon as his only limit. This experience of the open sea became the matrix of his work. The sea is no longer simply a subject he might have chosen, as others might choose mountains or the countryside. It has become an intimate, almost existential experience. When he paints an ocean, a lighthouse, an island or a sailboat, it is not so much to reproduce what he has seen, but above all to rediscover an emotion. This is the essential difference. The seascape is therefore less a subject than a starting point. What interests the artist is not the form of an island or a boat, but rather what their presence gives rise to within him: a silence, a call of the open sea, a moment of freedom.
